The total municipality has an area of 8,041 hectares.

West of Heerde lies the recreational area Heerderstrand, sheltered between forest and heath. Around the lake you will find both a sandy beach and a large sunbathing meadow. There are two kiosks, toilets, taps and showers, and ample parking. Throughout the year, this lake and the surrounding forest are frequently visited.
Besides ample recreational opportunities and beautiful varied natural areas, Heerde has excellent educational opportunities, a fine shopping stock, many industrial activities and a flourishing club life. The municipality of Heerde has a Christian comprehensive school for mavo, havo and atheneum and several elementary schools. Heerde is very popular as a place to live and work.
